Program Description

Radiography prepares individuals for a career in diagnostic radiology (x-ray) as a radiographer. The radiographer is a technologist who produces images of the human body to aid physicians in the diagnosis of injuries and diseases. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the entry-level certification examination administered by the American Registry of Radiography Technologists (ARRT) and may obtain employment in x-ray departments associated with hospitals, medical clinics, veterinary clinics and private offices. Program curriculum focuses on theoretical and applied radiography and includes a clinical experience in a radiographic department. Students learn to use x-ray imaging machines to demonstrate body parts on x-ray films for diagnostic purposes, including diagnostic radiology, bedside and trauma procedures, pediatric radiography and special procedures.

Program Goals and Student Learning Outcomes

The Radiography Program has established goals and student learning outcomes in accordance with the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology Standards. The Moraine Park program establishes benchmarks and utilizes a variety of tools to assess whether student learning outcomes are achieved. Examples of some tools are student assignments, exams and laboratory assessments. Some evaluations of technical skills and professional behavior include monthly evaluations, competency forms, employer and graduate exit surveys.

Goal: The students will be clinically competent and have entry-level employment skills of a radiographer.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  1. Using oral and written communication with the AIDET acronym.
  2. Students will appropriately position patients for radiographic exams.
  3. 1st year students: attempts on comps that fail, looking for a pattern for particular exams.
  4. 1st year students will use adequate radiation protection on exams.

Goal: The students will apply critical thinking and problem solving skills during radiographic procedures.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  1. Exercise independent judgement to correctly select correct exposure factors.
  2. Demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving by demonstrating the ability to self-assess and self-correct in relation to image quality.
  3. 1st year students will demonstrate role playing on different social skill behaviors on patients and technologists.

Goal: The students will demonstrate effective communication skills.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  1. Will use effective written communication skills with patients, in documenting patient HX on paper or on a computer.
  2. 2nd year students will use effective communication with appropriate body language, posture, and eye contact with patients.

Goal: The graduates will demonstrate professionalism and keep up-to-date with current trends.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  1. Students will be able to analyze the opportunities for career path options.
  2. 1st year students will determine the importance of the ARRT Ethics codes.

Goal: MPTC Radiography program will be evaluated for effectiveness annually.

Program Goals:

  1. Students will remain enrolled in the Radiography program.
  2. Students will have a five-year credentialing examination pass rate.
  3. Students will be employed following program completion.
  4. Students will be satisfied with the MPTC Radiography program.
  5. Student satisfaction with clinical experience.
  6. Employers will be satisfied with the MPTC Radiography graduates.

Admission Process

  • Submit the college admission application.   
  • Submit the $30 one-time fee.   
  • Submit high school and other official college transcripts.   
  • Take the college assessment test (ACCUPLACER, ACT or other). The ACCUPLACER assessment can be taken at MPTC.   
  • Health Requirements need to be met and a Criminal Background Check is required.

Radiography Mission
To provide the medical community with entry-level Radiologic Technologists competent to perform diagnostic medical radiography, along with the ability to successfully complete the certification examination administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Consistent with the institutional mission, the program is committed to the development of the student's educational and professional growth. These students shall utilize continuing education as a means of maintaining those skills. The program integrates both general and technical education to ensure that graduates can meet the multiple demands of rapidly changing technology in the medical field.

Program effectiveness data includes the program completion rate, credentialing examination pass rate and job placement rate. The Radiography program's 2014 annual report to the JRCERT reflected the following:

Completion Rate - January 1 through December 31, 2015
This is an annual measurement of the number of students that began the program divided by the number of students that actually completed the program. The program's completion rate for 2015 was 86%. Accepted 14 students and 12 completed  the program in 2015.

Credentialing Examination Pass Rate - 2011 through 2015
This is the number of students that pass the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination on the first attempt within six months of graduation from the program. The figure reflects an average over a five-year span. The program's credentialing examination pass rate stated as an average from the years 2011 through 2015 is 88%. Fifty-seven of the sixty-five graduates of this program taking the ARRT certification examination within six months of graduation passed on the first attempt.

Job Placement Rate - 2011 through 2015
This is the number of students that gain employment in the radiologic sciences within twelve months of graduation versus the number that graduate and are actively seeking employment. The figure reflects an average over a five-year span. The program's job placement rate as an average from the years 2011 through 2015 is 89%. Forty-seven of the fifty-three that passed the ARRT Boards obtained employment in the radiologic sciences within twelve months of graduation.
