GED/HSED Testing Information

Wisconsin offers two credentials to adults who have not graduated from high school:

  • Certificate of General Educational Development (GED®)
  • High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED)

Eligibility

To be eligible to test, you must meet the criteria below:

  • Be a resident of Wisconsin OR have lived in the state for at least 10 days OR be a migrant worker or the child of a migrant worker
  • Be 18 years, 6 months old or older OR the class with which you entered grade 9 must have graduated from high school
  • Not enrolled in a high school

Requirements

The first requirement towards earning your GED® or HSED is attending a free orientation at the Student Success Center. This orientation will get you working toward your personal education goal. You will complete assessments and use those results to determine your next step.

In Wisconsin, there are five exams required for the GED®. Those are
*Reasoning through Language Arts     *Social Studies     *Science
*Mathematical Reasoning     *Civics

Along with the GED® exams, students are required to complete Career Awareness.

For those who want to obtain an HSED, Employability Skills and health literacy are also required.

GED/HSED Testing

GED®/HSED testing is only conducted at Pearson VUE® Authorized Test Centers located at each campus or through OnVUE online GED® Exam proctoring.
Once approved for testing, register and pay for GED® Testing Services exams at their website or call 877-392-6433. GED® exams cost $39.75. For those who need to take the Health exam, please contact the Chief Examiner by email. There is no cost for the Health exam. Requests for Health exam scheduling must be made at least 7 days in advance.
No walk-ins are allowed.
Valid government issued photo ID is required for every testing session.

GED/HSED Records Request

Official GED®/HSED transcripts for other colleges and job applications must be processed through the WI Department of Public Instruction office.
To receive an official transcript, call 1-800-768-8886 or use their website: https://dpi.wi.gov/ged/transcripts . The state fee for an official transcript is $15.

Completed GED®/HSED at MPTC prior to May 2019 and attending MPTC as a program student, submit online request form. Click here for form. Allow up to 5 business days for transcript processing.

Completed GED®/HSED at MPTC after May 2019 and attending MPTC as a program student, your information is on file. No request needs to be submitted.

GED®/HSED completion verifications can be given through email to employers, prospective employers and other colleges.
In many cases, no official transcript is needed in the hiring process. Use the WI Department of Public Instruction website at: https://dpi.wi.gov/ged/verifications.  Include the candidate’s full name or names, full date of birth, last 4 digits of social security number, brief statement that you have a signed release on file.
