BEEN THERE? LEARNED THAT?

You may be coming to Moraine Park already equipped with valuable skills and knowledge gained from previous life experience. Whether you’ve gained this foundation from prior work, military, volunteer, training or other life events, you may be eligible to receive college credit for it at Moraine Park.  Students requesting Credit via Experience demonstrate their skills and knowledge through  submission of a portfolio, by completing a skill demonstration, or by attempting a challenge exam.  Learn more about MPTC’s Credit via Experience process below.

CREDIT VIA EXPERIENCE GUIDELINES

  • Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) generally requires a minimum of two (2) years related experience.
  • Not all courses are eligible for Credit via Prior Learning.
  • Students pay a non-refundable $90 processing fee for each course that is reviewed or for each skill demonstration that is performed.
  • Payment of the processing fee is due prior to the demonstration or upon submission of the portfolio.
  • Credits granted through the CPL process require Associate Dean approval and must fulfill a requirement within the student’s program of study.
  • Students need to be currently enrolled in a Moraine Park Technical College degree, diploma, or certificate program.
  • Students must successfully complete six (6) undergraduate level credits at Moraine Park with a grade of C or better before CPL credit will be posted to academic record.
  • A minimum of 25 percent of the total required program credits must be completed through MPTC coursework.
  • MPTC’s Credit via Experience Process is intended to provide MPTC credit for current Moraine Park students.  As a result, MPTC cannot guarantee the transfer of credits earned through this process to other colleges and universities.

PORTFOLIO

A Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) portfolio showcases your past experiences. We use this portfolio to see whether your experiences match the skills and knowledge of our course competency requirements. A submitted portfolio includes written reflections, artifacts and any supporting documents that demonstrate the mastery of course competencies.

Artifacts may include (but are not limited to):

  • Samples of work projects, products, reports or presentations you created
  • Performance appraisals
  • Certificates or awards
  • Job description
  • Letters of verification from supervisors, detailing the mastery of the competencies
  • Narrated videos of you performing the skills
  • Workshops, seminars or trainings (Note: For each training, workshop or seminar attended, you must submit documentation outlining the name and date of the event, as well as a document detailing the content of the training – agendas, outlines, handouts, etc.).

SKILL DEMONSTRATION

A Credit for Prior Learning skill demonstration consists of demonstrating the mastery of course competencies.

Skill demonstrations give you a “hands on” opportunity to “show what you know”.  An MPTC instructor will set up a series of tasks and ask you to complete them.  These tasks assess your skill and knowledge related to a specific MPTC course.  A successful skill demonstration allows you to earn college credit by showcasing your skills.  Demonstrations are pass/fail in nature.  No scores or letter grades are given to reflect your performance on the test.

Challenge Exams assess your skills and knowledge of specific course content.  These comprehensive tests provide the opportunity to earn college credit and fulfill requirements within your MPTC program of study.  They are pass/fail in nature.  No scores or letter grades are given to reflect your performance on the test.  For more information on MPTC’s Challenge Exam process click here.

Our students have the opportunity to transform their previous work experiences into college credit through the Credit via Occupational Experience process.  MPTC students pursuing Credit via Occupational Experience begin the process by completing the Credit via Experience Request Form below.

The form asks you to provide some basic information about you, your MPTC program of study, and your previous experiences.  It also asks you to identify some MPTC courses that would be good candidates for your Credit via Experience Request.

You can learn more about the courses required for your MPTC program of study by reviewing the course descriptions available on your program page.  Reviewing the course descriptions allows you to quickly identify which courses might match well with your previous experiences.

  • Review the course descriptions from your program of study. (Click here for instructions on how to view course descriptions).  Don’t worry if you aren’t completely sure which courses to list.  We can review the information you provide about your experiences and recommend some courses that might be good matches for you as well.
  • Click on the box below and complete the Request Form to begin the Credit via Experience Process.
  • MPTC’s Credit for Prior Learning Specialist will contact you once the form has been received.
