Paramedic Program Information

Important Information to Know

*Students must hold an EMT license to register for Paramedic courses.  If you do not have a current license, please contact your advisor to sign up for EMT-Basic.*

Paramedic is a full-time, day-time program with clinical requirements outside of classroom hours.  The series of classes and clinical requirements prepares you to take state exams to become a licensed paramedic.  There are two exams: written and practical/hands-on.  If you have text anxiety, please share this during your Program Advisor Meeting.

Paramedic is split between Fond du Lac and Beaver Dam campuses.  There are two ways to complete the Paramedic program:

EMT – Paramedic (1-year technical diploma) – 2 semesters of program specific coursework with very few general education requirements.

Paramedic Technician (2-year associate degree) – 2 semesters of program specific coursework PLUS 2 semesters of general education courses.

Both options end with the same licensure, but certain employers may prefer the associate degree.

Tools/Uniforms

A uniform is required in the class and at clinical sites. This includes EMT pants (black or navy), a black belt, black tactical boots, a name tag and a Paramedic shirt and fleece.  The shirts will be purchased from local vendors and the nametag will be purchased from MTPC’s  bookstore.

In addition, you will need:

  • iPad/laptop/tablet
  • A watch with sweeping second hand
  • Safety goggles
  • A stethoscope (Recommended but not required.)

Technical Standards and Abilities

EMT students must be able to complete certain activities. Below are some of the technical standards. If you are concerned with your ability to meet these or want a full list of the technical standards, it is important to talk with your advisor early.  More information will be shared during the field day, this includes acknowledgement that you are able to perform the activities.

  • Lift, carry and balance up to 125 pounds
  • Sitting, standing and maintaining balance
  • Work within confined spaces
  • Establish rapport with EMS personnel, patients, family members, bystanders, and other health care providers

Health and Other Requirements

For clinical placement you must:

  • Have your physical, immunizations, TB tests, flu shot, Covid vaccine and drug screening completed. You will receive this information from your advisor and is due on August 1st of the year you start paramedic classes.  If all your requirements are not completed, you will be removed from the course.
