EMT Basic Program Information

Important Information to Know

EMT – Basic is a single course that runs for one semester. There are also clinical requirements that must be done outside of classroom hours. This combination prepares you to take the state exams to become a licensed EMT. There are two exams: written and practical/hands-on. If you have test anxiety, please share this with me at your Program Meeting.

EMT – Basic may be offered at any/all MPTC campuses. However, the course rotates so it may not be at your preferred campus each semester.

EMT – Basic is NOT eligible for Financial Aid.

If your goal is to enter Moraine Park’s Advanced EMT or Paramedic program you will need to complete EMT-Basic first.

Tools/Uniforms

A uniform is required in the class and at clinical sites. This includes EMT pants (black or navy), black tactical boots, a black belt, a name tag and an EMT t-shirt.  The shirt will be purchased from a local vendor and the nametag will be purchased through MPTC’s bookstore.

In addition, you will need:

  • iPad/laptop/tablet
  • A watch with sweeping second hand
  • Safety goggles
  • A stethoscope (Recommended but not required.)

Technical Standards and Abilities

EMT students must be able to complete certain activities. Below are some of the technical standards. If you are concerned with your ability to meet these or want a full list of the technical standards, it is important to talk with your advisor early.  More information will be shared during the field day, this includes acknowledgement that you are able to perform the activities.

  • Lift, carry and balance up to 125 pounds
  • Sitting, standing and maintaining balance
  • Work within confined spaces
  • Establish rapport with EMS personnel, patients, family members, bystanders, and other health care providers
  • Ability to adapt to changing environments, deal with the unexpected, accept responsibility and accept feedback
  • Students must have sufficient critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Maintain confidentiality

Health and Other Requirements

Moraine Park offers the ability for students to get clinical hours via simulation.  If a student chooses to do simulation, no health requirements are required of the student beyond proof of CPR.  However, MPTC still recommends that students do clinicals with a department/service.  For external clinical placement you must:

  • Have your physical, immunizations, TB tests, flu shot, Covid vaccine and drug screening completed.  This information is due on the 1st of the month that your class begins (i.e. January 1st for spring start, August 1st for fall start). If all your requirements are not completed, you will have to complete all your clinical hours through simulation.
  • Have your CPR certification for health care providers.  If you don’t have it currently, you can take the training at Moraine Park.

More details will be provided about these requirements at your Program Meeting.
