Moraine Park Technical College’s Automotive Lab is located in Fond du Lac, WI and is part of the Automotive Technician and Automotive Technology programs. The Automotive Lab functions as a student training center, which performs vehicle repairs related to specific course content.

Please review the following information carefully before submitting request.

  • Vehicles that meet training needs
    • Cars and light duty trucks 15 years old or newer.
    • All vehicle repair request are subject to review.
  • Cost for vehicle repairs
    • Customer is responsible for cost of parts, materials, and $10 shop fee.
    • Customer supplied parts are not permitted.
    • No labor charge, although donations to the Moraine Park Auto Club are appreciated. (Ask student for more information about Auto Club donations.)
    • All vehicle repairs must be paid for in full before the vehicle can leave the premises.
    • Vehicles with major repairs, such as engine and transmission repairs, will require payment on high cost part(s) prior to repairs being performed.
    • Estimates are provided before repairs are performed. A dollar amount can be discussed with the student before repairs begin as this can expedite repairs.
  • Lab policies and procedures
    • All repairs are performed by students.
    • Students are supervised by experienced and certified instructors.
    • Repair requests need to apply to course instruction.
    • There is no promised time of completion. Be prepared to leave the vehicle for a prolonged period of time.
    • There is no guarantee or warranty on repairs.
    • Vehicle modifications will NOT be performed.
    • Collision or restoration work is NOT performed.

Vehicle Repair Schedule

Fall Semester

  • Auto Service Fundamentals (August through Mid-September)
    • Oil changes, tire service, serpentine belt, replace differential or transfer case fluid, replace external light bulbs, wiper blades, etc.
  • Climate Control Systems (August through Mid-September)
    • Air conditioning, lack of heat concerns, blower fan, compressor, evaporator, condenser, heater core, etc.
  • Brake Systems (Mid-September through October)
    • Brakes (does not include antilock brakes)
  • Engine Repair 2 (Mid-September through October)
    • Engine repairs, oil leaks, coolant leaks, engine noises, engine replacement, head gasket, timing belt, etc.
  • Steering & Suspension Systems (November through December)
    • Alignment, struts, tie rods, ball joints, shocks, power steering, steering racks, steering column, tires, etc.
  • Engine Performance 2 (November through December)
    • Engine performance concerns, Check Engine light on, engine runs rough, misfires, stalls, doesn’t start, exhaust repairs.
  • Shop Simulation/Internship (Fall Semester – Work done Friday mornings)
    • Students will be able to perform repairs listed in the following courses: Auto Service Fundamentals, Brake Systems, Steering & Suspension Systems, Electrical & Electronic Systems 2 & 3, Engine Repair 1 & Engine Performance 1.

Spring Semester

  • Advanced Chassis Systems (Early January)
    • Anti-lock brakes, traction control, air suspension, automatic suspension systems, stability control system, electric steering system, driver assist systems, etc.
  • Electrical and Electronic Systems 2 & 3 (January through March)
    • Battery, starter, alternator, inside/outside lights, gauges, power lock, windows, mirrors, and seats, window defogger, air bags, factory anti-theft systems, cruise control, etc.
  • Auto Transmission/Transaxle (January through March)
    • Automatic transmission diagnosis, service, repair, or replacement
  • Engine Repair 1 & Engine Performance 1 (March through May)
    • Coolant flush, thermostat, radiator, hoses, engine mechanical testing, Check Engine light, spark plugs, ignition coils, fuel tank, fuel filter, fuel pump, fuel injector cleaning etc.
  • Manual Drive Train and Axles (March through April)
    • Clutches, manual transmission, CV joints/boots, u-joints, axle/differential repair, 4WD/AWD concerns, wheel bearings, etc.
  • Light Duty Diesel Engine Operation (March through April)
    • Diesel driveability concerns and maintenance
  • Hybrid Electric Vehicle (May)
    • Perform hybrid and/or electric vehicle diagnosis and repairs
  • Shop Simulation/Internship (Spring Semester – work done Friday mornings)
    • Perform all repairs except those listed in Automatic Transmission, Manual Drive Train and Axles, Light Duty Diesel Engine Operation, and Hybrid Electric Vehicle
