The Fire Medic associate degree program prepares students for an occupation in the fire service and paramedic arenas. Courses focus on thoroughly preparing a firefighter/paramedic for entry onto a full- time fire department or other emergency response organization in the public or private sector.

After completing this program, the students are prepared to challenge the National Registry for EMT-Paramedic exam. The students will be prepared as firefighters and paramedics. Fire Medic students are prepared to respond to the diverse incidents of today’s emergency service.

Students enrolled in the Fire Medic associate degree program at MPTC will gain comprehensive knowledge and hands-on skills to excel in both fire service and emergency medical response. The curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for the dual role of firefighter and paramedic, equipping them to handle the diverse and complex incidents faced by today’s emergency services. Through foundational courses such as Fire Fighting Principles and HazMat Awareness, students learn fire behavior, suppression techniques, and hazardous materials operations.

What You’ll Learn

On the emergency medical side, students’ progress through a rigorous paramedic sequence covering anatomy and physiology, patient assessment, pharmacology, respiratory and cardiac management, trauma care, and medical emergencies. Clinical field experiences provide real-world application of classroom learning, ensuring graduates are prepared for high-pressure environments. Upon completion, students are eligible to challenge the National Registry EMT-Paramedic exam and enter the workforce as highly skilled Fire Medics ready to serve in public or private emergency response organizations.

Graduates of a Fire Medic Associate Degree typically launch their careers in municipal fire departments, county or state EMS agencies, private ambulance services, or hospital-based transport units.

Potential careers include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Firefighter – Municipal or county fire departments
  • Firefighter/Paramedic – Dual-role positions in full-time fire departments
  • Paramedic – Providing advanced life support in ambulance services or EMS agencies

Admission Requirements:

  • Criminal Background Check

This program also requires:

  • Proof of a valid driver’s license
  • Physical and Health Requirements
  • Current NREMT certification or WI state licensure at EMT level (minimum)
  • Students without current licensure can complete EMT-basic prior to or during the first semester of the program.

Students who do not meet the requirements will be ineligible to earn the Fire Medic associate degree.

High school dual credit provides high school students the opportunity to earn college credit while in high school, without leaving their high school classroom. The courses are taught by certified high school instructors using technical college curriculum, grading policies and textbooks.

Has previous life experience already helped you build knowledge and skills applicable to your studies? Applying previously earned credits to a program of study can save you both time spent in the classroom and money spent on tuition and fees.

Financial Aid is provided to aid eligible associate degree and technical diploma programs with 28 credits or more. Processing can take 6-8 weeks after a student’s completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is received.
