Abby Roecker: A Head Start in Health Care

Abby Roecker, a Waupun High School Senior, is paving the way for student success through dual enrollment opportunities at Moraine Park, all while preparing for a future in health care.

Driven by her passion for making a meaningful impact in people’s lives, Roecker is part of Moraine Park’s Pre-Health Academy, where she’s gaining a strong foundation in the field. She’s already completed courses like Medical Terminology, General Anatomy & Physiology, and Nursing Assistant, setting herself up for success in her future health care program at MPTC.

As an academy student, Roecker is earning college credits in two ways: dual credit, where she takes college-level courses at her high school taught by her own teachers, and Start College Now, which allows her to attend classes at Moraine Park, taught by college faculty—all at no cost.

“I first heard about Start College Now from some friends, and my counselors also brought it to my attention,” Roecker said.

Despite juggling high school and college coursework, Roecker makes it look easy. Her days are packed with classes, afternoons spent studying, and evenings dedicated to gymnastics practice or club meetings.

Her dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. “Abby has done an excellent job planning ahead for her intended program at MPTC,” Jess Mueller, a counselor at Waupun High School, said. “She took full advantage of Start College Now, remained diligent in her studies, and is now reaping the benefits of being ahead of the game. I’m proud of her hard work and commitment to her future.”

This fall, Roecker will begin Moraine Park’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) associate degree program with an impressive 24 college credits already completed.

“I was drawn to the DMS program because of its hands-on learning approach and the opportunity to work closely with advanced medical technology,” Roecker said. “Using imaging to help diagnose and assist in patient care aligns perfectly with my passion for making a difference.”

For other students considering college courses in high school, Roecker offers this advice: “Don’t hesitate to ask for help from teachers, counselors, or college advisors. They’re there to guide you.”
