Hometown: Mayville, WI

What sparked your interest in your program?
My high school guidance counselor helped spark my interest in graphic design when I was looking for electives to take. At the time I had no idea what I wanted to do after high school and struggled to find something that interested me. She had suggested I take a class where we did visual communications and photography to explore my creativity. I decided to take that class, digital communications, and instantly fell in love with graphic design. I knew from that moment forward that I had found a career I would be passionate about.
Why did you choose Moraine Park?
I chose Moraine Park Technical College because of the environment, community, flexibility and support. When I walk through the doors of Moraine Park, I feel welcomed, safe, and most importantly, that I belong. When I started college, I knew that I was going to be working part-time and was able to learn online and also in person. I was able to complete my education the way I needed. Everyone is super supportive, which makes college easier.
Who or what has supported you most during your journey?
During my journey, my mom supported me the most. She always told me that it does not matter what I do as long as I am trying. She is my personal cheerleader. She helped me find a good work, college and life balance so I do not feel burnt out. I am thankful that she has always been there for me and continues to support me.
What skills have you gained so far that you’re most proud of?
I am most proud of my leadership, collaboration and time management skills that I have gained. This year I was given the opportunity to be the Graphics Club president and that has made me a much stronger leader and helped me to step outside of my bubble. That also helped my collaboration skills grow as well. Between group projects and extracurriculars, I have learned how to work effectively with others. I have learned how to manage my time effectively so I can balance work, college and life.
What are your career goals after graduation?
My career goals after graduation are to continue learning and growing every day, whether I am in a job or doing freelance work. I desire to collaborate my graphic design skills within marketing and social media as well and want to focus my career in that direction when possible. In addition to graphic design, I want to grow my photography business.
What has surprised you most about your experience in the program?
The thing that surprised me the most about my experience in the graphic design program is that soft skills are just as critical as artistic ability. We have worked a lot on our presenting, articulating design choices, accepting feedback and managing time. When I first started the program, I was expecting to only be working through our skills and quickly realized that soft skills are a huge part of graphic design too. I was also surprised with how helpful my professor, Brenda Blum, is. She has been a huge influence on my education and has never stopped pushing me to be the best version of myself that I can be.
What would you say to someone who is considering Moraine Park or your program?
Something I would tell someone who is considering Moraine Park or graphic design is that you will have an amazing time learning and have numerous people to support you on your journey. You will be able to grow outside of your bubble to meet new people and engage in student events. You will not regret attending Moraine Park Technical College.
