Student Emergency Fund: Zachary Schultz’s Story

When Zachary Schultz enrolled in Moraine Park’s Nursing program, he was determined to find the fastest, most affordable path to becoming a registered nurse. At 25, he wanted to advance quickly into his career, and Moraine Park offered a more cost-effective option. After starting the pre-core program last fall, he plans to enter the core program next semester and graduate in 2027.

Originally considering a career in substance use disorder counseling, Schultz chose nursing for its broader specialization opportunities and hands-on focus. He is especially drawn to psychiatric nursing.

In 2025, Schultz faced an unexpected health challenge. A serious stomach issue left him unable to eat, caused him to miss classes and resulted in a hefty hospital bill. Already balancing school and financial responsibilities, the expense put his academic progress at risk.

That’s when Schultz turned to Moraine Park’s Student Emergency Fund, which he first learned about through the College’s counseling center. The application process was straightforward—he submitted proof of financial hardship along with his hospital bill. Because the expense exceeded $500, he received the maximum award.

“The support came at the perfect time,” Schultz said. “It covered a big part of the bill, let me set up a payment plan for the rest and kept me from having to work more hours or sell my belongings. Without it, I would have fallen behind again and risked missing the core program this spring.”

The emergency fund had a lasting impact both personally and academically. By easing financial stress, it allowed Schultz to focus on his studies and continue building his leadership skills. Today, he serves as Vice President of the Fond du Lac Campus Student Senate and tutors chemistry—roles that let him give back to his peers while preparing for his future in nursing.

Schultz also expressed deep gratitude to donors. “Without this program, my progress in nursing would have been hindered. Many students face even bigger setbacks, and the emergency fund makes a huge difference,” he said. “It really kept me moving forward.”

Because of the Student Emergency Fund, Schultz is on track to reach his goal of becoming a psychiatric nurse and continue making progress toward graduation.

The Student Emergency Fund was established to help program students who encounter an unforeseen financial emergency that would otherwise prevent them from continuing their education at MPTC. In 2024-25, the Student Emergency Fund provided $41,388 in support.
