As a first-generation college student, Rick Parks understands firsthand the doors education can open. Today, as a member of the Moraine Park Foundation Board, he’s committed to making sure those doors remain open for future generations.
Parks was the first male in his family to graduate from college, earning his degree from Indiana State University. Like many students, his path was shaped by scholarships and support from others—assistance that made higher education possible for both him and his wife, whom he met while in college.
“That support mattered,” Parks said. “And being in a position later in life to give that back is very satisfying.”
Following graduation, Parks began what would become a 43-year career in the insurance industry. An entry-level role quickly grew into leadership positions across the midwest. In 2005, he joined Society Insurance in Fond du Lac as senior vice president and chief operating officer, later serving as president and CEO from 2011 until his retirement in 2023.
It was through his professional and community involvement that Parks first connected with Moraine Park.
“Moraine Park has always been a positive and impactful presence in the Fond du Lac community,” Parks said. “I was impressed by the people and by the mission—offering education and training that truly serves the local community.”
That mission aligned closely with Parks’ own values, especially when it comes to technical education.
“Supporting technical education is very important to me,” he said. “There’s been such a strong emphasis on four-year degrees, but technical training is a completely viable and rewarding career path. There will always be a need for skilled trades, even as technology and artificial intelligence continue to change the workforce.”
Parks and his wife are longtime supporters of the Moraine Park Promise Program, which helps remove financial barriers for students and is designed to be sustainable for years to come.
“We saw the Promise Program as a way to create lasting impact,” Parks said. “It’s something that can continue making a difference long after we’re directly donating.”
As the Moraine Park Foundation celebrates 50 years of supporting students, Parks sees the milestone as both meaningful and reassuring.
“The Moraine Park Foundation’s 50th anniversary is incredibly significant,” Parks said. “Longevity shows staying power and a commitment to being there for the long run. While 50 years is a tremendous achievement, the need isn’t going away. If anything, it will continue to grow, and I believe the Foundation will keep building to serve even more students in the next 50 years.”
