MPTC Carpentry Apprentices Sweep Podium at Skills Competition

Three Moraine Park Carpentry apprentices swept the podium at the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Apprenticeship Skill Competition.

The Skill Competition, held in West Bend on Friday, Jan. 26, included 35 competitors representing six technical colleges in carpentry, electrical, HVAC and plumbing. The day-long event included a four-hour, hands-on practical competition in the morning and a written exam in the afternoon.

“This is an awesome experience for the apprentices who get to measure their skills with those of their fellow competitors,” John Mielke, president of ABC of Wisconsin, said. “The competition allows us a glimpse of the amazing talents of our future workforce. We are certainly proud of all of the competitors.”

Moraine Park apprentice, Timothy Gittel, placed first and is eligible to compete at the National Craft Championship in Orlando, Florida.

“The competition tested us on skills that I wasn’t super confident in, so it was challenging and motivated me to get better at my craft,” Richard Mora-Rivas, MPTC Carpentry apprentice, said. “It was a fun day, and I’m honored to have placed next to other MPTC apprentices.”
