SUMMARY:Community Presentation: Masood Akhtar\, Founder of We Are Many - United Against Hate
DESCRIPTION:The MPTC Diversity team is excited to welcome Masood Akhtar\, founder of We Are Many-United Against Hate\, to share his story! We Are Many-United Against Hate is a nonpartisan\, nonprofit organization of common people—urban and rural\, spiritual and secular—seeking equal protection for all\, united against hate\, bigotry and racism. The organization does outreach and intervention in communities to promote understanding\, healing\, reconciliation and redemption. Instead of simply condemning the latest eruptions of hate-inspired violence\, they dig down to the root causes of division\, fear and hate. And they advocate policies creating greater economic security\, promoting religious tolerance\, celebrating differences and honoring America’s heritage of openness to foreigners. \nEmployees\, students\, and community members are invited to attend. The presentation will be in person in the FDL campus Conference Center\, and streamed to WB Room T117 and BD Room K311. \nMicrosoft Teams Link \n

SUMMARY:The Bootstrap Narrative
DESCRIPTION:The bootstrap narrative is essentially the belief that a person in the United States who works hard\, assumes personal responsibility and maintains a strong moral center can accomplish anything. Unfortunately\, for many students from low-income families\, this narrative does not reflect their experiences at institutions of higher education. Many intelligent and hardworking low-income students struggle to overcome food insecurity\, homelessness and/or the mental and emotional stress adversely impacting their ability to earn a degree. Join Jackie Morgan in discussing this narrative and how emergency funding and community resources can address and alleviate student barriers. \nAttend in-person in FDL Room A-112 or virtually on Teams

SUMMARY:Student Parents or Parenting Students?
DESCRIPTION:Finding the right terminology to talk about this demographic is a complicated process. Parenting students are a diverse bunch\, and their experiences can vary widely depending on other identities they hold. The complexity of the language teaches us a lesson about the complexity of student parents as a whole: They are not a monolithic group. That’s important for us to remember as we work to understand their needs and find ways to support their success. Join Jackie Morgan in discussing the unique parenting student demographic\, some MPTC statistics and ways to support these students! \nAttend in-person in FDL Room A-112 or virtually on Teams
