Program Description
Surgical technologists are allied health professionals who are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients in a variety of settings.
The surgical technologist works under medical supervision to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. This individual works to ensure that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.
A surgical technologist possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician’s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
The clinical case requirement for program completion includes a minimum of 80 cases.
The Surgical Technology program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) in cooperation with the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA). ARC/STSA is sponsored by the Association of Surgical Technologists, the American College of Surgeons and the American Hospital Association, 1361 Park Street, Clearwater, FL 33756, 727-210-2350.

Program Outcomes
- Apply health science, biomedical and technological principles to the peri-operative environment.
- Apply principles of disinfection and sterilization to the surgical environment, equipment and instrumentation.
- Maintain principles of sterile technique in the surgical environment.
- Prepare the operating room by gathering equipment and supplies.
- Pass instruments, equipment and supplies in a safe and efficient manner.
- Provide a safe, efficient and supportive environment for the peri-operative patient.
- Anticipate the sequence of events during surgical procedures.
- Demonstrate safe practice with medications and solutions.
- Function as an ethical, legal and professional member of the health care team within the surgical technologist's scope of practice.
- Demonstrate proficiency on the comprehensive surgical technologist exam as specified by the NBSTSA.

Admission Process
- Submit the college admission application.
- Submit the $30 one-time fee.
- Submit high school and other official college transcripts.
- Take the college assessment test (Accuplacer, ACT or other). The Accuplacer assessment can be taken at MPTC.
- Meet with Admissions to discuss order of courses and prerequisites (required for this program).
- Health Requirements need to be met and a Criminal Background Check is required.
- Check with Admissions if any additional steps are required.
