Even during the busy rush of finals, the Beaver Dam Student Senate at Moraine Park Technical College wanted to make a difference in its community.

Music & Memory, a personalized music program improving the quality of life for those living with dementia, was introduced to the Beaver Dam Student Senate earlier in the academic year. Each year, students select a volunteer opportunity to collaborate on, and Music & Memory was chosen for these volunteering efforts.

Remembrance Home in Beaver Dam has the Music & Memory program and was in need of a larger storage space to house iPods, headphones and the charging units utilized to bring personalized music to their residents on a daily basis.

Several Moraine Park students donated their time, tools and building skills over the last few months to build a custom storage unit for Remembrance Home. The finished unit was presented to Remembrance Home on May 17 during the final week of school.

“I am very proud of the work our students put into volunteering for these projects, especially amidst year-end final projects, assignments and exams,” said Lisa Manuell, Moraine Park Student Life-Lead. “While volunteerism is great for the community, it’s also great for students. These projects specifically allowed them the opportunity for teamwork and problem solving, which are both great employability skills to add to resumes.”

Brenda Voigt, CNA and the Music & Memory lead at Remembrance Home, expressed her excitement for the unit. She indicated that they are now able to centrally locate all of their Music & Memory equipment in the dining room, making personalized music even more accessible for the residents they care for.

Wendy Gosdeck in the Technology and Engineering Education department at Beaver Dam High School was also instrumental in these efforts. With her help, the Beaver Dam Student Senate utilized the woodshop and tools in order to complete the project.
