Accreditation Review Committee on Education in Surgical Technology (ARC-ST)

On the basis of compliance with the Standards and recommendations of the ARC-ST , accreditation is granted by CAAHEP. CAAHEP, in cooperation with the ARC-ST, is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), a non-governmental body which reviews and recognizes accrediting agencies. The Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologists (LCC-ST) offers the Certified Surgical Technologist/Certified First Assistant (CST/CFA) credential and the National Surgical Assistant Association (NSAA) offers a Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) credential. As states have begun to regulate the profession of surgical assisting, they have recognized the need for a nationally recognized accreditation process for surgical assistant education programs, and have recognized CAAHEP as the accrediting body suited to this purpose.

The Committee on Emerging Surgical Technology and Education (CESTE) is a standing committee of American College of Surgeons. CESTE conducts study in the implications of emerging surgical technologies and finds best methods of developing generic policies that will accelerate education in this area and protect our patients' welfare. Various subcommittees of CESTE deal with Standards related to new technology, education in new technology, assessment of new technology, and Model Development for teaching new technology and assessment of proficiency.
