As more and more countries lock up more and more of their citizens each year, the author wrote to help fill a glaring “void in prison reference books.” His work includes material on famous and important prisons, prison reformers, prison architecture and prison architects. In the introduction, the author argues that the “way a society treats its prisoners can tell you much about its culture,” which makes this a valuable resource for many, both inside and outside of the criminal justice system.
