Surgical Technology

Associate Degree: 10-512-1
Campus: Fond du Lac

Surgical Technology is an associate degree program that prepares students to become a vital part of the surgical team. The coursework is focused on the development of knowledge in human anatomy; microbiology and medical terminology; and how to identify and effectively handle surgical instruments, supplies and equipment. Clinical rotations provide hands-on experience in hospital operating rooms to apply the knowledge and skills under real surgical conditions.

Surgical technologists work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, RNs and other surgical personnel in delivering optimal patient care. They assume responsibilities (before, during and after surgery) for preparing the operating room, securing supplies, setting up equipment and instruments for the team, and anticipating the surgeon’s needs during the surgical procedure. Scrub, circulating and assisting surgical technologists have primary responsibilities for maintaining the sterile field, being constantly vigilant that all members of the team adhere to aseptic technique.

The Surgical Technologist program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) in cooperation with the Accreditation Review Committee (ARC) for Surgical Technology.  ARC is sponsored by the Association of Surgical Technologists, the American College of Surgeons and the American Hospital Association, 1361 Park Street, Clearwater, FL  33756, 727-210-2350.

This program is a nontraditional occupation for men.

Due to current demand, once admitted to the program there is a minimum wait of 2 - 3 years to enroll in clinical core classes. As a result, Moraine Park cannot guarantee continuous full-time enrollment for students with precore status. (Precore status is assigned to all accepted nursing students who are either working to complete the clinical prerequisites or who have completed prerequisites but are waiting for clinical course availability).
