“Mission Impossible – Why General Education?”:  Keeping a job while growing and advancing in the workplace requires more than training. Moraine Park Technical College provides opportunities for education as well as training. The job market today requires strong “soft skills,” i.e., skills in communicating both verbally and in writing. Problem-solving abilities, making wise and informed decisions, and working effectively in teams are all “soft skills” that employers are seeking. General Education courses will add value to a technical diploma or associate degree in three different but related ways. Upward Bound:  A federal pre-college program of the US Department of Education that supports disadvantaged youth while in high school and into their sophomore year of college. The program was created in 1965 focusing on education as a way out of poverty. Students are academically strong, but neither parent has a bachelor’s degree. The program has an academic year component and a required 6-week summer school. Your Career, Your Choice, Your Design – A Self-Designed Associate Degree:  Moraine Park Technical College’s Individualized Technical Studies program is a self-designed associate degree program for currently employed individuals. This program was designed for the person who has clearly defined career goals that are not met by any single existing Moraine Park Technical College degree program.
