NATE is the only technician certification organization governed, owned, operated, developed, and supported by the HVACR industry. They certify technicians in the following specialties: air conditioning, air distributors, heat pumps, gas heating, and oil heating. Their site provides information on certification, including materials to help you prepare for and sign up for testing.
AHRI (Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute)

This organization represents more than 350 manufacturers globally. They certify products and advocate for the industry. AHRI sees itself as the linchpin for bringing together various stakeholders to build and strengthen the education, training, and certification programs registered for a qualified, top notch workforce. They release a variety of statistics, and produce an e-newsletter and AHRI Trends Magazine. Contact information about scholarships can also be found at this site.

HVAC Equations, Data, and Rules of Thumb

This 790-page book is packed with tables and diagrams. It is detailed and comprehensive enough for experienced practitioners, but the care taken to clarify definitions and rules of thumb make it a valuable reference for students as well.
HVAC Maintenance and Operations Handbook

The introductory section includes a glossary and basics of HVAC design. Others sections cover commissioning, Management of maintenance and repair, and maintenance and repair technology.
HVAC Licensing Study Guide

Electronic HVAC Controls Simplified
