United States Fire Administration (USFA)

A branch of FEMA, which, in turn is a branch of the Department of Homeland Security, the USFA’s mission is to reduce the losses of lives and property caused by fires and related emergencies through leadership, advocacy, coordination and support.  The site includes fire statistics, public fire education campaign materials, and information on funding opportunities.

Building and Fire Research Laboratory (BFRL)

This arm of the National Institute of Standards and Technology offers free downloadable publications, fire safety factsheets, and FIREDOC, a web searchable database which references over 80,000 documents.  Another section known as “Fire on the Web” provides links to fire-related software, experimental fire data, and mpeg/quick time movies of fire tests.

International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF)

Since 1918, this labor union has advocated for those who work in this essential and potentially dangerous field.  They represent roughly .3 million fire fighters and paramedics.

The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVGC)

While the IAFF represents full time firefighters, the NVGC represents volunteer firefighters.

Officially designated to train and educate personnel for over 870 fire departments in Wisconsin, the WTC’s fire page provides information about certification and links to various Wisconsin firefighting organizations.

The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC)

Includes links to many firefighting organizations, as well as a “members only” section with forums, newsletters, and other resources.  Also has a job board where you can look for openings or post your resume.

This book is based on an analysis of the work of firefighters and questions from previous examinations, as well as technical literature.  It will give you the feel of the exam before you take it and help you to identify any weak areas so you can spend more time on them.

This publication of the International Association of Fire Chiefs consists largely of practice tests.  Also included are references which tell readers where to go for further information.

Master the Firefighter Exam
